A Sentinel's Perch

The Raven sat amongst the shadows of the building with a view onto Trafalgar Square. He had surveyed the surrounding streets and sensed no sign of any Revenants or creatures of darkness. In the days since defeating The Ripper, John could not detect much in the way of darkness tracing through the capital's streets. Finding a place to sit, John rested against an enormous gargoyle and watched the sun setting behind London's skyline.

Every inch of him wanted to challenge Kimberley as she waited at the base of Nelson's Column, but he knew better than to act in haste. Having watched her from afar, John had not chanced speaking with her since leaving the hospital. He had seen her enough to know she was safe, but now he wondered if it had been the right choice to let her be so far from him. Catching only parts of the conversations, John had chanced a connection with Kimberley in the street not moments before.

As she had navigated the busy underground network, John had merged with the crowds, and while he could never shield himself from her view, the anonymity provided by the sea of faces had been enough. Knowing she was forever conscious of his existence, the dark magic that could shroud him from other people's consciousness no longer affected her. Pushing through the tightly packed platform, all he had needed was the lightest of touches as their paths crossed to steal a fleeting glimpse of her memory.

Brushing his fingertips against the back of her hand, his mind had navigated to the conversation with Diana and the anger had surged through him. Seeing her flinch, John had watched her from a distance without showing himself. Blending with the commuters and tourists, Kimberley had scanned the crowds before boarding the packed underground train. As the grime-covered carriages pulled out of the station, John felt the anger boiling inside him. Knowing he was concealed from view, he dropped from the platform and onto the lines.

Hearing the rumble of trains along the labyrinth of snaking tunnels that passed over and under one another, John made quick work of navigating the tunnel away from the platform. Finding a small access hatch, he pulled it open and made his way into the service tunnels that ran alongside the primary tunnels.

'This feels much more like home.' John had remarked as he made his way back to the long forgotten underground station.

Having stolen the memory, John watched what he could in the confines of an old, abandoned train carriage and made his choice. Hours later, he found himself hidden among the shadows, eagerly waiting for the meeting between Kimberley and Diana. The sun bathed John in its blood-red glow as it descended behind the distant horizon and skyline. Admiring the curious glow of his coat, John called the plague doctor mask to his hand and admired the intricacy of its design.

Having found the old Victorian underground station, a relic of a familiar past, John had felt he once again belonged.
